Lake Chenderoh, north of Kuala Kangsar, is one of the oldest artificial lakes of Malaysia, formed in 1929 by the construction of a dam in the Perak river.
Friends had told us that there existed a peaceful resort on the shores of this lake, Suka Suka, consisting of original Malay houses, disassembled at their original location, and carefully reassembled at Suka Suka by its owner Aziz.
And there were waterfalls nearby! Reason enough to spend a few days in Suka Suka, enjoy the delicious food prepared by Asiah, the wife of Aziz, do some kayaking on the lake, and explore the waterfalls.
Rani, who had visited Suka Suka a few times already, was our guide. We left home around 10 am and had lunch in Sauk, (in)famous for the Al-Ma'unah heist of 2000. Now it is a quiet village with a few good seafood restaurants. We had a Value for Money (VFM) lunch at Sun Kong.
At Suka Suka we got a friendly welcome by Aziz, Asiah and their son Azam. Our 'chalet' was spaceous and full of traditional atmosphere. After a relaxing afternoon, we enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner in the restaurant, also a rebuilt Malay house with a nice view of the lake.
The next morning, after breakfast, we went out to explore the waterfalls. We parked our car at Kg Danglang and followed the trail along the river. There are three waterfalls in the river, Lata Bayas, Lata Payung and Lata Batu Bertangkup. We visited the first two. As there had been quite a lot of rain, the waterfalls were very impressive. From Lata Payung we had a nice view of the Chenderoh lake.
After lunch in one of the famous Ikan Bakar restaurants near the lake, we went back to Suka Suka for a well-deserved rest. Later that afternoon we did some kayaking on the lake. Without a GPS you would get lost easily.
The next morning Aziz took us for a boat ride to the island where the resort started, 15 years ago. Simple huts, a perfect place to get away from the world...:-)
Then it was already time to go back to KL. We visited a pottery factory near Kuala Kangsar and had lunch in one of the famous Chicken Rice restaurants in Ipoh.
Definitely we will come back to this Suka Suka paradise!
