Jupiter (Zeus) was the\u00a0king of the gods and Juno (Hera) his wife. Jupiter was an promiscuous god with numerous extramarital affairs and Juno was a jealous spouse, always keeping a eye on her adulterous husband.\u00a0 Here are a few of his affairs<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He lusted for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Io_(mythology)\">Io<\/a>, and transformed the girl\u00a0into a cow, to hide her from\u00a0 his wife. In vain, Juno\u00a0asked him to give her the cow as a present.<\/li>\n<li>He abducted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europa_(mythology)\">Europa<\/a>, disguised as a bull. King Minos of Crete was one of their children<\/li>\n<li>He fell in love with the nymph <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Callisto_(mythology)\">Callisto<\/a> and took the shape of virgin goddess(!) Artemis to seduce her.<\/li>\n<li>He was so enchanted of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ganymede_(mythology)\">Ganymede<\/a>, that, in the shape of a raven, he\u00a0took\u00a0the beautiful boy(!) to Mount Olympos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will understand that as schoolboys we were always\u00a0happy when our Latin and Greek \u00a0teachers told us about these myths&#8230;:-)<\/p>\n<p>Back to astronomy. Jupiter is the largest\u00a0planet in our solar system. The planet is so big\u00a0that all the other planets\u00a0would fit in it. It is the second-brightest planet (after Venus) in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>In 1610, Galileo discovered that Jupiter has four moons. In the image you can see their size, compared to Jupiter. They look small beside\u00a0the planet, but they are actually big. At the moment 67\u00a0\u00a0moons have been observed, of which 53 have been named, often\u00a0after Jupiter&#8217;s girlfriends and boyfriends&#8230;:-) Here is the complete\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/planets\/jupiter\/moons\">list of Jupter&#8217;s moons<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It may now be clear why the spacecraft has been named Juno \u00a0\ud83d\ude42 \u00a0After the launch of the spacecraft, NASA published a mission statement in which they\u00a0explained the name of the spacecraft:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">The god Jupiter drew a veil of clouds around himself to hide his mischief, and his wife, the goddess Juno, was able to peer through the clouds and reveal Jupiter&#8217;s true nature<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Actually the mission of Juno is to explore Jupiter and not his\u00a0moons&#8230;:-) Much is still unknown about this gas giant. Does it have a solid core? Does its atmosphere contain water?\u00a0An important part of the mission will be\u00a0the study of Jupiter&#8217;s gravitational and magnetic fields.<\/p>\n<p>So, let us follow Juno on her exploration of Jupiter. It took her five years to reach Jupiter. Therefore\u00a0it is first launched in an (elliptical) orbit around the sun.<\/p>\n<p>The Deep Space Maneuvers\u00a0one year later will bring it back very close to Earth, which will give it a <span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">gravitational slingshot<\/span>. See my <a href=\"https:\/\/stuif.com\/blog\/?p=4851\">Rosetta blog<\/a> for an explanation.<\/p>\n<p>As a result the orbit becomes a hyperbole, at the right moment crossing the orbit\u00a0of Jupiter, where it\u00a0will be captured by the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a fascinating <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/f\/fa\/Juno_spacecraft_trajectory_animation.webm\">animation<\/a> of the whole process.<\/p>\n<p>Jupiter has to be approached carefully because of its intense\u00a0radiation belts. The magnetic field of a\u00a0planet traps charged particles like electrons and protons in a doughnut-shaped\u00a0region around the planet. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juno_Radiation_Vault\">Radiation Vault<\/a> is the brown box on top of the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>Note the size of the human!<\/p>\n<p>To minimise the radiation risk, Juno has to be captured carefully\u00a0in a polar orbit. The original plan was to reduce the period to 14 days, after two capture orbits (1 and 2). The first reduced orbit (3) would be a clean-up orbit, followed by 32 &#8220;science&#8221; orbits (4-36), each of them slightly shifted, so the whole surface of Jupiter would be covered.The image gives an impression of these science orbits. The next two orbits were used for testing and diagnostics.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, on 17 February 2017, mission control decided it was too risky to perform the Orbit Reduction Maneuver. So the\u00a0\u00a0spacecraft will remain in \u00a0its 54 day orbit. Totally 12 science orbits will be performed until July 2018. The next perijove (orbit 7) will occur on 11 July.<\/p>\n<p>It must have been quite a disappointment for the scientists, instead of new data every two weeks, they now have to wait almost eight weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Are there results already? The instruments that are measuring the magnetic field of Jupiter and the composition of the Jovian atmosphere are collecting data, it seems the magnetic field is more lumpy than expected.<\/p>\n<p>The most spectacular results come from the on-board camera <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/JunoCam\">Junocam<\/a>. Here is an image of Jupiter&#8217;s south pole, not observable from Earth. Keep in mind that these images are color enhanced! Part of the south pole region is visible. Will be interesting to see images.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the Juno mission, \u00a0the spacecraft will be directed into the Jovian atmosphere, where it will be completely destroyed. This will be done to avoid any chance that material of Juno might &#8220;contaminate&#8221; one of \u00a0Jupiter&#8217;s moons.\u00a0If ever life forms are found on these moons, there must not be any doubt about its origin.<\/p>\n<p>To end this post in a lighthearted way, the Juno has three\u00a0passengers on board!
